Horseshoe Heights Public School February 2026 Newsletter

Principal’s Message:

January brought us an extended stretch of very cold weather, and we want to thank families for ensuring students arrived each day bundled up and prepared for the temperatures. As we move into February, we’re hopeful that the weather will begin to ease and that we’ll start to see some warmer, more comfortable days ahead. Packing extra mittens, socks, or a change of clothes is still helpful as conditions continue to shift.

We are excited for our upcoming Winter Carnival Week, taking place from February 9–13. Throughout the week, students will enjoy a variety of themed activities and school-wide fun. Our main outdoor celebration day is scheduled for Thursday February 12, and we encourage students to come dressed for winter play. It will be a wonderful opportunity for our school community to embrace the season together.

Term 1 report cards will be sent home on Friday, February 13. These reports reflect the ongoing learning and assessment that has taken place over the term, including observations, conversations, and a variety of student tasks. Teachers use the provincial achievement chart categories—Knowledge and Understanding, Thinking, Application, and Communication—to evaluate student progress. If you have any questions about your child’s report or would like to learn more about the assessment process, please reach out to your child’s teacher or visit the Ministry of Education’s website: https://www.ontario.ca/page/student-assessment-evaluations-and-report-cards .

We are also looking forward to Pancake Day on Tuesday, February 17. Students are asked to bring a plate and utensil from home to help us reduce waste. A heartfelt thank‑you to all the families who have generously donated syrup and pancake mix—your contributions help make this event possible and are truly appreciated.

Finally, mark you calendars for our upcoming Math and Science Family Fun Night that will take place on Thursday, March 26. We are planning engaging, hands-on activities for families to enjoy together. It will be a wonderful evening of learning, connection, and community spirit. We hope to see many families join us—please mark your calendars. More details will be shared soon.

Wishing everyone a fantastic February filled with learning, laughter, and the promise of warmer days ahead.

Horseshoe Heights Read-a-Thon Feb 9-27

Horseshoe Heights Public School is proud to launch our first Read-A-Thon. Our Read-A-Thon Fundraiser is scheduled to take place from February 9th to 27th. This exciting event will encourage students to read while raising funds for our Library.  We have some exciting events, including a “Masked Reader” competition and bookmark reading pledges. All funds raised will be directed to various areas, including STEAM and the library.

Today, the students received a bookmark to record their reading each night (only one signature per night!) and a pledge sheet. Students are asked to read for 15-20 minutes each night for 14 nights. Please return the pledge sheet to the school, even if no money was raised. This is just a reminder that students are not to go door to door seeking donations.

Donations to support the Read-A-Thon can also be made on SchoolCash Online.

Thank you for your support!
